Twice Bitten

Twice bitten, thrice shy and yet the only one surprised
That my heart was my demise once again
Weaknesses were all confessed, I showed her just which ones to test
Sharpened the knife, then placed it in her hands
As her plans began to fall in line, we kept it tame for quite some time
Just took each others burdens for a trial
But as I wandered down the overpass, designed to hide her hourglass
While she wrapped me 'round her fingers with a smile

But oh, that's just how it goes
When you let yourself believe you'd found what you lost long ago
And now you that you should let it go
But all the while she's making sure there's still a candle left to hold
I've all but gone insane on this broken, bended knee
I'd maybe have a shot at breaking free
If her damned ghost would let me be

So there lay all the stones, overturned and in a row
The road ahead is long, and you won't know where to go
You'll grow to hate the sound of, "This is surely for the best.
She's still your first thought now, but soon enough she'll be the next."

How a clever snare, I felt both duped and self aware
When I'd find doubt, she'd swiftly see it swept away
Her well rehearsed 'Oh woe is me', a must for those set to deceive
Was too well worn, to say the least, yet on display
